THE EVENT

HIGH-LEVEL EVENT OBJECTIVE

The nature of work is undergoing a rapid transformation around the world. The result is that, in many sectors and groups of the world's population, workers' rights are regressing rather than advancing.

In the Global North, wages and working conditions won through decades of struggle are now threatened by technological platforms, reactionary policies, and coercive management that have created a new crisis of precariousness on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the Global South, workers face practices that violate labour and human rights, whether in the fields, factories, mines, or the informal economy. They are exposed to hazardous conditions and condemned to cycles of poverty and crises resulting from the climate emergency.

These situations call for a coordinated and robust response that safeguards the rights of working people globally and enables a better future of work.

On November 13th and 14th, 2024 a high-level event "International Labour Congress: towards a Labour International" will be held in Madrid, bringing together labour ministers, legislators, trade union leaders, workers, lawyers, and thinkers to push for the formation of a Labour International. The aim is to consolidate a new global front in the struggle for labour rights in the 21st century. A movement that, by placing working people at the centre, will enable the double transition, green and digital, demographic changes and migratory movements to be governed in terms of labour, social, and climate justice.

PROGRAMME

The event will take place on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th November 2024, in a participatory plenary that will address relevant issues to defend the rights of working people and shape the International Labour, around four discussion themes:

  • Session 1: Safeguard the power of workers and trade unions in the Workers' Statutes of the 21st century. Towards a true democracy at work.
  • Session 2: Govern transitions and expand labour rights. Tackle slavery to algorithms and the climate emergency.
  • Session 3: Depatriarchalize work. A new Labour Movement that is feminist and diverse.
  • Session 4: A united front for workers' rights that brings together the Global North and South. Assessment of current situation and next steps.

The event will begin with opening remarks by prominent international personalities and the Second Vice-President of the Spanish Government.

Each thematic session will be moderated by an expert, and speakers will include senior representatives of European countries and international organisations, as well as parliamentarians, lawyers, and trade union representatives from different countries and sectors, among others.
